Variations
- You can use different-colored cards for the hat. This is great if you want to make several different scarecrows.
- Why not cut the toilet roll in half and make baby scarecrows?
- If you don’t have any toilet rolls, a kitchen roll will work just as well. You could keep it at the bigger size to make a super tall scarecrow or cut it in half to make two toilet roll-sized cardboard rolls.
- Why not get some colored wool and add this under the hat to make the scarecrow look like it has hair? This could also work to make boy or girl scarecrows if you wanted to.
- You could decorate the hat with glitter, jewels, or feathers or stick anything you like to it.

Step One: Begin with a toilet paper-sized cardboard roll. Most of the time, these cardboard rolls are already brown in color, but if yours isn’t, take time to paint it brown and let it dry before proceeding.
Step Two: Print the hat template and cut out the pieces. Trace the main hat shape onto a piece of card in the color of your choice. Then, cut it out. Trace and cut the rectangular strip band from another color of cardstock.
Step Three: Glue the band above the brim of the hat.
Step Four: Now, cut six small strips from the yellow cardstock. You will also need to cut a small yellow triangle.
Step Five: Glue the strips to both sides of the hat, three on either side.
Step Six: At this point, cut a few notches from the hat to make it look torn and tattered.
Step Seven: Next, add googly eyes to the cardboard roll. Glue the nose in the center of the roll.
Step Eight: Use the black marker to draw a simple mouth for the scarecrow. You can also use the black marker to draw a couple of crosshatch marks on the hat.
Step Nine: Finally, cut two small slits at the top of the roll, one on each side.
Step Ten: Insert the hat into the slits to complete your super cute cardboard roll scarecrow craft.
