White Hot Chocolate Ingredients

white hot chocolate ingredients
  • 4 cups milk
  • 1.5 cups white chocolate chips
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • whipped cream, marshmallows, sprinkles, etc. for garnish (optional)

Products used in this recipe:

  • Stainless steel saucepan
  • Whisk
  • Ladle
  • Vintage/thrifted mugs, linen, & spoon
  • Pastel sprinkles (jimmies)

Variations

  • If preferred, you can use bars of white or vanilla baking chocolate instead of chips. Chop roughly before adding to the saucepan with the rest of the ingredients to ensure that the chocolate melts evenly.
  • For an even thicker consistency (remnant of European drinking chocolate), replace 1-2 cups of the milk with heavy cream or half & half.
  • Why not make it an adult-only drink and add your favorite liquor? Baileys always works well with drinking chocolate, and as it is an Irish Cream, it is a great addition to white hot chocolate. Alternatively, you could look to add your favorite spirit or liquor.
  • You could add different sprinkles to the whipped cream or even some edible glitter. This would be a great drink to enjoy at Christmas time, where you can make it look extra festive.

Recipe Notes and Tips

  • If children are helping, make sure they are supervised when making the white hot chocolate.
  • This hot white chocolate will thicken upon cooling. If a film forms on the top of the liquid in the pan, turn the heat back on low and whisk until smooth again.
  • Make sure you have everything you need before you start to make the hot chocolate. You won’t want to not supervise the melted chocolate while you are getting cups ready to serve.
  • If you want to store any leftovers, make sure it cools completely. You may notice that a film forms again on the top but you can which this before adding it to your chosen container for storage. Make sure it is an airtight container. A mason jar would work well.

FAQs

What should I serve with the white hot chocolate?

It is always nice to add some marshmallows to any hot chocolate. You could also add a sprinkle of cocoa powder if you wish. For more adult drinking chocolate, you could also look to add something like Baileys, a liquor or spirit of your choosing.

Can I store any leftover white hot chocolate?

Yes, you can. It will last in the fridge for a few days. Just let it cool and then store it in an airtight container or jar. Then heat up on the stove when you want to drink it again.

Can I freeze white hot chocolate?

You can freeze it. You might want to make it more concentrated, so reduce the amount of milk but keep the same amount of chocolate. This will make a thicker, chocolate sauce but you could then freeze it in ice cub trays, take a few out and add to some milk to reheat when you want a cup of your favorite white hot chocolate.
