We all know salt is a great way to add a little bit of flavor to your food. But there are so many other amazing ways to use the pantry staple throughout your house.

From safely scrubbing your pots and pans to making your laundry cleaner, salt is a great natural cleaner to have on hand. And in addition to being convenient, using salt around your house is also safer than filling your home with the harmful chemicals found in many commercial cleaners.

So, grab your salt and try one of these 10 ways to use salt around your house today.

Cleaning Your Home with Salt

Salt is a great natural cleaner! Use salt to clean your house with these tips:

  • Get rid of water rings. Refresh wooden furniture with water rings by making a paste of salt and vegetable oil. Rub the paste over the water rings to buff the stains from the wood. Then, use a clean cloth to wipe away any residue.
  • Polish brass and copper. To naturally clean brass and copper in your home, create a paste of equal parts flour, salt, and vinegar. Rub the paste on the metal and let it rest for at least an hour. Clean the metal with a soft cloth to reveal a new shine.
  • Remove soap scum. Get rid of soap scum on your shower doors by sprinkling half of a lemon with salt. Use the lemon to scrub the door, then rinse the residue away with clean water.
  • Get wine out of the carpet. If you accidentally spill your wine on your carpet, soak up as much of the liquid as you can with a cloth and sprinkle the stain with salt. The salt will soak up the remaining liquid, helping prevent a red wine stain.

Ways to Use Salt in the Kitchen

Salt isn’t just for cooking! Clean up in your kitchen using salt with these tips:

  • Clean cast iron pans. Do your cast iron pans have stuck-on food and grease? Quickly and safely get them clean with salt. Sprinkle salt on the pan and scour the pan by rubbing the salt over the pan with a damp paper towel. Then, wipe the salt away with a clean paper towel.
  • Deodorize your drain. Pour salt into your drain and flush it with hot water to remove odors and prevent grease from building up in the drain.
  • Quickly clean oven messes. If your dish bubbles over as it’s baking, sprinkle a little bit of salt on the spill while it’s still warm. Allow the oven to cool, giving the salt a chance to form a crust, making it easier to wipe away.
  • Keep your fruit fresh. Make sure your apples last longer by soaking them in salt water after bringing them home from the store. The saltwater will help clean and protect the fruit from browning.
  • Put out a grease fire. If you end up with a grease fire in your kitchen, cover the flames with salt to put the fire out.

Using Salt in the Laundry Room

Bring your salt from the kitchen to the laundry room with these easy laundry hacks:

  • Clean your iron. If your iron has hard water buildup, easily clean it with salt. Just sprinkle a layer of salt on a piece of paper and run a warm iron over the salt. Unplug the iron and allow it to cool, then wipe the salt from the iron with a clean cloth.
  • Remove bloodstains. If you have a shirt with a bloodstain, soak the fabric in cold saltwater. Wash the salt away in fresh warm water and boil the shirt after rinsing.
  • Get rid of sweat stains. Salt is also great for removing sweat stains from clothing. Mix salt with hot water and soak your sweat-stained shirt in the mixture before washing.

More Great Uses for Salt

Salt has uses around the house that don’t involve cleaning. These additional uses for salt around the house and garden are handy ways to use the common pantry ingredient.

  • Keep ants away. Make sure ants don’t come inside your home by sprinkling a line of salt at your windowsills and doorways.
  • Kill poison ivy in your yard. To get rid of poison ivy in your garden or yard, mix one gallon of soapy water with three pounds of salt. Pour the mixture into a sprayer and spray the leaves and stems of the poison ivy plant to kill it.
  • Keep cut flowers fresh. Make your blooms last longer by adding a pinch of salt to the water in your flower vase before adding the flowers.
  • Kill fleas in your carpet. If your pet brings fleas into your home, easily get rid of them with salt. Sprinkle finely ground salt over your carpets and rugs and let it sit for 24 hours. Vacuum the salt from the rug and empty the bag outside to ensure you remove all the fleas from your home.

As you can tell there are so many ways to use this simple product around your home.
