When you think about working out, what comes to mind?

Do you think about jumping on a treadmill and running?

Lifting weights in a gym?

Endless pushups and jumping jacks?

While these are all great ways to stay in shape and burn some calories, you might not have a ton of fun while you’re doing them.

Fitness should be fun – especially if you’re trying to make it a habit!

Fortunately, there are lots of things you can do to shake up your workout routine and bring a little bit more fun and excitement into the process.

Here are just a few ways to make working out way more fun:

Sweat with a friend!

Working out alone isn’t fun for everyone, and it can be tough to stay motivated when you’re on your own. If this sounds like you, consider asking a friend to join you on your workout.

Whether you go for a jog, take your bikes out for a ride on your favorite trail, or challenge each other to a fast-paced game of racquetball, you’ll be surprised by how much fun you can have when you’ve got someone else to talk to and laugh with!

Shake things up.

Doing the same thing over and over will get boring fast. Don’t get stuck in a bad routine.

Instead, keep things exciting for yourself by varying your workouts. Always hit the weight room? Try dropping into a local fitness class or stopping by a rock climbing gym for something new.

From swimming and biking to Zumba and hiking, there are a surprising number of ways you can get your workout in.

Create a personal challenge.

If you find it fun to work toward a goal, create a personal challenge for yourself.

Need to be more diligent about working out? Commit to hitting the gym three times a week for two months.

Want to get better at running. Sign up for a 5k and create a training plan to take you from where you are today to the start of the race.

Giving yourself something to work toward can be incredibly motivating and can make the experience way more enjoyable.

Get outside.

Gyms are great for getting in a workout, especially during cooler months or stormy weather.

However, if you’re feeling a little bored by your current routine, you can make things way more fun by heading outside and burning some calories in the fresh air.

Head to a local high school track and time your lap speed or find a local trail and immerse yourself in nature on a scenic hike.

A change of scenery can make a surprising difference in how much you enjoy your workout.

Sign up for a class.

For some, fitness classes are the way to go if you want to stay motivated and have fun.

You’ll find most classes have a few things in common – a peppy instructor, upbeat music, and the challenge of keeping up with the group as you find your groove.

From kickboxing to yoga, you’re sure to find something fun to try!
