This easy coloring pencil craft is a fun way to kick off the school year, and kids of all ages will love doing it. Here’s what you need to do:

1. Firstly, gather everything you need for the craft and set it out. Begin by painting a single regular-sized craft stick in the color of your choice.

2. Once one is done, you can then continue painting more craft sticks to create a full box of colored pencils. Let the paint dry completely.

Variations

  • You could have a go at making your own packaging or box for the pencil once they are made. Using some card, you could fold up a box shape and cut a window inside so that you can see the colors available. Just as you would see if buying a pack of pencils in the shop. Have fun decorating the box.
  • Use glitter instead of paint for the colors. This can get a little messy, but it is also a lot of fun. Add a layer of glue and sprinkle over the glitter, or use glitter pens for something different.
  • If you don’t have craft sticks, you could cut strips of very thick card. Toilet rolls or kitchen rolls could be useful for this.
  • You might not have all the colors, so why not use this as a chance to mix different colors together? The perfect experiment and a fun extension of this creative craft.
  • Why not use sticks instead? Go out and collect small thin sticks and then have fun painting them. Autumn is the perfect time to collect sticks outside and turn them into something fun and colorful.

Notes and tips

  • This is a great craft for younger ones. There is a little bit of intricate cutting needed, but safety scissors will make this easier. Or you may need to help little ones with that part of the craft.
  • Set everything out ready so that your little ones can enjoy this craft independently. Use little jars for the paint, or add a dollop of each paint color on a plate. Small and thin art brushes are easier to handle for this craft.
  • You can make as many pencils as you like. There are some great suggestions later in this post for what they can be used for.
